## Free Vimeo alternatives

Free video hosting always charges you in something other than money: ads, branding, a storage cap, or the data on who watched. Here are the genuinely free ways off Vimeo, sorted by which of those costs you can live with, and the cheapest paid hosts for when free runs out.

**Disclosure:**We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. It never affects our rankings.

You typed "free" for a reason. Vimeo’s renewals have climbed, its 2025 and 2026 billing changes have pushed people onto plans they did not ask for, and its September 2025 sale to Bending Spoons has left readers unsure where pricing goes next. One Reddit thread is titled, flatly, "Stop paying Vimeo after a decade." So the search makes sense. The honest answer takes one more step.

Free video hosting is never actually free. It bills you in something other than money, and the whole job of this page is to say what. YouTube is free and unlimited, and you pay in ads on your embeds, a branded player and no owned audience data. Vimeo’s own Basic plan is free and capped, and it can delete your source files 60 days after a paid account lapses. The free tiers on Wistia and Vidalytics are real, and each caps storage, bandwidth or features to move you onto a paid plan. The infrastructure hosts are close to free at small scale, and they hand you a developer product instead of a dashboard.

None of that makes free a bad idea. It makes free a trade, and the right pick depends on which trade you can accept. If you only need reach and can give up owning the audience, one answer is right. If the video sits on a page that has to convert, a different one is. If you are a developer who just wants clean playback with no branding, a third.

So this is not a ranked list of "the best video host." It is the free field, ordered by what free costs you, plus the cheapest paid hosts for the day your library outgrows every free tier, which for anyone running paid traffic comes sooner than you think.

Quick answer

**YouTube** is our top pick for most people. The only option here that is free with no storage or bandwidth ceiling, which is why it is the honest first answer to the word "free." The catch is what free costs you. Embedded videos can show ads even on channels outside the Partner Program, the player is branded and shows recommendations you cannot fully switch off, and you get public view counts instead of first-party data you own. Right for reach and discovery, wrong as the only player on a page that has to convert.

* **YouTube.** Best for genuinely free, unlimited hosting.
* **Wistia.** Best for a branded free marketing host. Has a free tier.
* **Vidalytics.** Best for testing a real VSL player for free. From $24/mo.
* **Mux.** Best for developers embedding clean, metered video.

### The shortlist, by what free costs you

Every pick below is free to start. Each one charges you differently. Pick the line whose trade you can live with.

1. 1
#### YouTube, for genuinely free and unlimited
Unlimited uploads at no cost, forever, on the biggest audience on the internet. You pay in ads on your embeds, a branded player and public view counts instead of data you own. Best when reach matters more than control.
2. 2
#### Wistia’s free plan, for a branded marketing host you control
Ad-free, clean playback with real analytics on a free tier, capped at 25 GB and one seat, with the Wistia badge on the player. The natural free step off Vimeo for a company, until the caps push you to $79 a month.
3. 3
#### Vidalytics Free Forever, for testing a real VSL player
A free way to trial an actual video sales letter player, with up to 3 videos and 50 GB of monthly bandwidth. Analytics are restricted on the free tier, so it is for proving the fit, not for scaling paid traffic.
4. 4
#### Mux, for clean, unbranded embeds a developer can wire up
A free tier of 100,000 delivery minutes a month and up to 10 stored videos, with an ad-free, unbranded player you control by API. No marketing features, and you build the setup yourself. Cheapest path to a clean embed.

### How the free tiers compare

Vimeo’s own Basic plan is the top row, so you can see what changes when you switch. The last three columns are the real price of free. Checked 14 September 2026.

| Tool | Free plan | Free ceiling | Ads on embeds | Removes branding | You own the data |

| YouTube | Yes | Unlimited | Yes | No | No |

### The free picks, in detail

#### 1\. YouTube, best free Vimeo alternative for reach

Free and unlimited. No storage or bandwidth bill, ever.

YouTube for Creators, the free upload and hosting side of YouTube.

If free is the only hard requirement, YouTube wins on the numbers and it is not close. It is the one host here with no storage cap, no bandwidth cap and no bill, and it hands you the largest built-in audience online, plus search and retargeting reach no paid tool can match. For a channel, a public library or the top of a funnel, it is rarely a mistake to be on it.

The cost lands the moment you embed it somewhere that has to convert. YouTube’s own documentation is the problem. Its Help pages say embedded videos may show ads, and a Terms of Service update lets YouTube monetize content even on channels outside the Partner Program, so switching monetization off is not a guarantee. Recommendations cannot be fully removed either: the rel=0 parameter now only limits related videos to your own channel, and the old modestbranding parameter that reduced YouTube’s branding is deprecated. You also trade owned data for public view counts, so you never learn who watched.

That is the trade in one line. YouTube is free because your video works for YouTube too. Keep it for reach, and do not make it the only player on a sales page.

##### What works

* Free and unlimited uploads, delivered on a global CDN
* Built-in discovery, search and retargeting audiences no other host has
* No storage or bandwidth bill, at any scale

##### What to watch

* Embedded videos can show ads, even on channels outside the Partner Program
* The player is branded and shows recommendations you cannot fully remove
* You get public view counts, not first-party audience data you own

#### 2\. Wistia, best free Vimeo alternative for teams

Free plan: 25 GB storage, one seat, Wistia badge on the player. [Read our full Wistia review](/reviews/wistia).

Wistia’s homepage, showing its business video hosting and marketing platform.

Wistia is the free tier to reach for if you are a company and you want the video to stay yours. The free plan gives ad-free, clean playback with real engagement analytics, hosts up to 25 GB with 200 GB of monthly bandwidth, and lets you embed on your own site rather than on a public platform. It is the closest free replacement for what Vimeo does well, with the marketing layer Vimeo keeps thin waiting on the paid tiers.

The catch is spelled out in the plan. The free tier is one seat, it stamps Wistia branding on the player, and the caps are low enough that a real library hits them quickly. Removing the branding and turning on the marketing features means the Business plan at $79 a month, and the lead-generation tier jumps to $329\. So Wistia’s free plan is genuinely useful for a small, owned library, and it is a stepping stone to a paid bill, not a permanent free host for a growing team.

Before you commit, know the ceiling: if locked-down, protected delivery is your reason for leaving Vimeo, Wistia’s video DRM sits at its enterprise level, so this is not the cheaper fix for that.

##### What works

* Branded, ad-free embeds with forms and CTAs
* Heatmaps, A/B testing and engagement analytics
* Real CRM integrations for lead scoring and follow-up
* Free plan to start

##### What to watch

* Built for B2B content, not paid-traffic VSL optimization
* Business plan $79/mo, Lead Gen tier jumps to $329/mo
* No sales-scored split testing or cart-level attribution

#### 3\. Vidalytics, best free Vimeo alternative for VSLs

Free Forever plan: 3 videos, 50 GB/mo, restricted analytics. [Read our full Vidalytics review](/reviews/vidalytics).

Vidalytics’ homepage, presenting its marketing-focused video player and analytics.

Vidalytics is the one free tier here built for the job Vimeo cannot do at all: a video sales letter that has to sell. On the front end you get smart autoplay, resume play, timed CTAs and play gates. On the back end, the data a DR marketer actually needs, second-by-second retention, heatmaps and conversion tracking. The Free Forever plan lets you put that in front of real traffic before you spend a cent, with up to 3 videos and 50 GB of monthly bandwidth.

Read the free tier for what it is: a trial, not a home. Analytics are restricted on the free plan, and the serious reporting, heatmaps, segmentation and conversion tracking, starts on the paid Pro tier at $79 a month, with paid plans opening at $24\. So this is the pick when you want to confirm a purpose-built player lifts your VSL before committing budget. It is not a free way to run a scaled offer.

One number to size before you point spend at it: bandwidth is metered, and paid plans bill overages at $0.33 per GB. On paid traffic, bots and cheap clicks push that up fast, so match the plan to your volume rather than the sticker price.

##### What works

* Purpose-built VSL controls: smart autoplay, resume play, timed CTAs, play gates
* Second-by-second engagement graph, heatmaps and buyer/non-buyer segmentation
* Conversion and revenue tracking, plus native A/B tests scored on clicks or sales
* Free Forever plan to start; paid from $24/mo ($19 billed annually)

##### What to watch

* Bandwidth beyond your plan is billed at $0.33/GB, so a high-traffic VSL can outrun the sticker price
* Smaller independent review base than mainstream hosts, so less third-party proof to check
* More player and analytics settings than you need if you only want to host and embed a clip

#### 4\. Mux, best free Vimeo alternative for developers

Free tier: 100,000 delivery minutes/mo and up to 10 stored videos, no card.

Mux’s homepage, showing its usage-based video infrastructure for developers.

Mux is the free pick when you want a clean, ad-free, unbranded player and you are comfortable with code. Its free tier covers 100,000 delivery minutes a month and up to 10 stored on-demand videos, with no credit card to start, and both the Mux player and its analytics are free. The result is embedded playback that is entirely yours: no ads, no recommendations, no host badge, and first-party data on who watched.

The trade is that Mux is infrastructure, not a product. There is no upload dashboard for a marketer, no forms, no heatmaps and no lead capture. You wire the player and the workflow into your own site through an API, which is a real project rather than a settings page. Past the free tier it is usage-based, priced by input, storage and delivery, so a small library stays close to free and a busy one bills by what it actually serves.

For a developer or a team with one, Mux is the cheapest way to a professional, controllable embed. For a marketer who wants to log in and upload, it is the wrong shape, and Wistia’s free plan or Vidalytics is the better free start.

##### What works

* Free tier: 100,000 delivery minutes a month and up to 10 stored videos, no card
* Clean, unbranded, ad-free player you control through an API
* Usage-based after that, so a small library stays close to free

##### What to watch

* Built for developers: you wire up the player and dashboard yourself
* No lead capture, forms, heatmaps or marketing features
* Past the free tier, billing is metered by input, storage and delivery

#### When free runs out: the cheapest paid field

Every free tier above has a wall, and paid traffic hits it early. When it does, the cheapest replacement is usage-based infrastructure rather than another monthly plan. Bunny runs pay-as-you-go with a $1 monthly minimum and delivery from roughly $0.005 to $0.01 per GB, on a 14-day free trial with no card. Cloudflare Stream bills by minutes stored and minutes delivered. Mux carries on past its free tier on the same metered model. All three undercut a paid Vimeo plan and none of them add ads. The trade is the same as Mux’s: they are closer to plumbing than to a product.

If you want a hosted product with a dashboard but cheaper than Wistia, SproutVideo starts around $12 a month billed annually and bundles a white-label player, analytics, lead capture and CTAs, and Gumlet opens near $9 a month. Both are paid from day one, but they are a fraction of a marketing-suite price.

And there is a version of this where you keep YouTube on purpose. Keep uploading to it for public reach, search and retargeting, where free and unlimited is the whole point, and embed one of the clean hosts above on your landing, sales and paid-ad pages, where the ads, recommendations and missing data cost you conversions. Using each tool for the job it is good at beats forcing one free host to do both.

### How we evaluated these

We do not run these tools on live paid campaigns, and we do not pretend to. We read each vendor’s own documentation and pricing pages for what a tool is, does and costs, and we read long-term user reports on Reddit, Hacker News and review sites for how it holds up once real money is behind it. The free-tier limits and prices in this article were read on the vendors’ own pricing pages on 14 September 2026; video pricing changes often, so treat the date as part of the fact.

For a "free alternatives" list, the sticker price is zero by definition, so we scored each option on the five things that actually differ once free is on the table: whether it is genuinely free or a time-limited trial; the real ceiling, in storage, bandwidth or video count; whether it puts ads on your video; whether it lets you drop its branding; and whether you own first-party data on who watched. Then we named the price it charges instead of money, because that is the part a "free" list usually leaves out.

We rank ordinally and publish no star scores, because a number invites you to argue with the decimal instead of the decision. You can read the full [method behind our rankings](/methodology) and [how we make money](/how-we-make-money).

### Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to Vimeo?

It depends on what you can live with. YouTube is free and unlimited, but it puts ads on your embeds, brands the player and gives you no owned audience data. Wistia’s free plan hosts up to 25 GB on one seat and keeps its own badge on the player. Vidalytics has a Free Forever plan that lets you trial a real video sales letter player. For clean, unbranded embeds a developer can wire up, Mux gives a free tier of 100,000 delivery minutes a month and up to 10 stored videos.

Is there a truly free video host with no ads and no branding?

Not at any real scale. YouTube is free but carries ads and its own branding. Wistia and Vidalytics free tiers drop the ads but keep their branding and cap storage, bandwidth or video count. Mux’s free developer tier is unbranded and ad-free, but it is capped at 10 stored videos and 100,000 delivery minutes a month, after which you pay by usage. Free always shows up somewhere in the bill, as ads, branding, a cap or lost data.

Does Vimeo have a free plan?

Yes. Vimeo Basic is free but capped on uploads and shows Vimeo branding, and the marketing, analytics and custom-embed features sit on paid tiers. One thing to know before you rely on it: Vimeo says source files on a lapsed paid account can be deleted after about 60 days, so download your originals before you downgrade to Basic or cancel.

What is the cheapest way to host videos if free is not enough?

Usage-based infrastructure. Bunny runs pay-as-you-go with a $1 monthly minimum and delivery from about $0.005 to $0.01 per GB, on a 14-day free trial with no card. Cloudflare Stream bills by minutes stored and minutes delivered. Mux is free up to its tier, then metered. SproutVideo starts around $12 a month billed annually and Gumlet from about $9\. All undercut a paid Vimeo plan, and none of them add ads.

Can I use a free tier for a VSL or paid traffic?

To test, yes. Vidalytics’ Free Forever plan lets you build a real sales-video page with up to 3 videos and 50 GB of monthly bandwidth, though analytics are restricted and the serious features start on the paid Pro tier. YouTube is a poor VSL host: the ads and recommendations pull viewers out of your funnel. Once real ad spend is behind the offer, you outgrow every free tier fast.

Will a free host hurt my conversions?

A YouTube embed can. On a sales or landing page, its ads, related-video suggestions and branded controls give viewers exits you did not choose, and you never see who watched. A free tier you control (Wistia, Vidalytics, Mux) keeps the page yours and gives you first-party data. The common setup is to keep YouTube for public discovery and embed a clean host on the pages that have to convert.
