Quick answer

Vimeo is our top pick for most people. Vimeo hosts portfolios, client reviews, courses and events with an ad-free player. A paid-traffic sales letter is a poor fit, since the reports show watch time and the sale stays on your checkout. Heavy embed traffic can lead to an email from Vimeo about the account. The 2025 and 2026 billing changes moved some longtime accounts into that same discussion.

  • Vimeo. Best for business hosting. Has a free tier.

Vimeo is the simplest pick for clean, ad-free, professional hosting: portfolios, client review, courses and events, on a player that shows no ads and no recommended videos. For a lot of teams that is exactly enough, and the entry price looks cheap at around $12 a seat.

It is the wrong main player for one specific job: a paid-traffic video sales letter. The conversion, retargeting and heatmap stack a direct-response marketer needs is not there, so you cannot prove which traffic buys. The entry price is also not the whole bill. Each paid plan carries a monthly bandwidth threshold, and an account that keeps passing it can be asked to move to a custom plan, so judge Vimeo against the traffic you expect to send it.

What works

  • Clean, ad-free, reliable hosting
  • Strong client-review and portfolio tools
  • An entry-level plan at a low yearly rate, plus a free plan

What to watch

  • No sales-scored tests or revenue attribution
  • A monthly bandwidth threshold, with a follow-up if you pass it
  • Watch-depth pixels and cart postbacks are not part of the product

Custom plans

Capterra reviewers say a large library of embedded videos can pass the account limits and move the customer to a higher contract, priced on bitrate and traffic.

“may result in limiting one's account and being forced to subscribe to a more expensive custom plan for an enterprise-level bitrate and traffic.”

Price

Reviewers call the bill high for what the plan includes. The bandwidth threshold is a separate worry, and both push people toward a host with one flat rate.

Bandwidth policy

Vimeo's bandwidth article sets a 2 TB monthly threshold. An account that goes past the included amount may be asked to use less bandwidth, move up, or leave. The analytics page shows second-by-second heatmaps of watch time.

“If an account requires more bandwidth than what our subscription plans were designed to support, we’ll reach out to the user to explore alternative options. Those options can include upgrading to a custom plan that better fits their bandwidth usage, bringing down their bandwidth below the 2TB monthly threshold, or even migrating off of our platform, if Vimeo is no longer the best solution for their needs.”

Livestream plan and price

The upgrade plan page says an Advanced or Enterprise plan is required to live stream, and it lists hosted livestreamed events. Advanced is $75 per month, billed annually. Starter is $12 and Standard is $25 on the same billing, and those two are shown plus applicable tax.

Event length and viewers

Advanced permits up to 2 simultaneous streams with a 12-hour limit per stream. Enterprise supports up to 3 simultaneous streams with a 12-hour limit each, with an add-on to extend streaming to 24/7. The live FAQ describes thousands of concurrent viewers and asks for contact before 50,000+ viewers outside the United States or 100,000-150,000+ viewers within the United States.

Simulcast, DVR and simulive

Simulcast allows up to 10 integrated destinations at once and up to 20 custom RTMP destinations. Viewers can rewind up to the most recent four hours of a live stream. A recorded asset can be scheduled to premiere three times across time zones.

What users say

Vimeo's defenders praise exactly what it is for: a clean, ad-free player, reliable hosting and strong client-review and portfolio tools. For professional presentation without YouTube's clutter, it still has fans across creator and agency threads.

The criticism in 2025 and 2026 is loud and specific, and it is about money. One long-time subscriber titled a thread "Stop paying Vimeo after a decade," and another describes being pushed toward a much pricier Enterprise plan. Most of those complaints are about plan changes and the bandwidth threshold after the Bending Spoons acquisition. Few of them fault playback quality.

Pricing

The prices are the annual rates on Vimeo's upgrade page. Storage limits come from the plan comparison chart. Bandwidth comes from the bandwidth article.

Plan Annual Storage Bandwidth
Free $0 3 GB 1 TB
Starter $12/mo 2 TB 2 TB
Standard $25/mo 4 TB 2 TB
Advanced $75/mo 7 TB 2 TB

The annual column is billed once a year, plus tax. Starter, Standard and Advanced can also be purchased month to month. On the free plan, the storage limit applies to video you embed or keep private. Public videos that stream only on Vimeo are outside that storage limit. The upgrade page lists one user on Starter and five users on Standard. If monthly bandwidth exceeds the included allowance, playback continues. Vimeo may then ask you to use less, move to a custom plan, or take the library elsewhere. Opening a second account does not increase the limit.

Vimeo for a sales video

Use Vimeo for a sales video when the page needs a clean embed and the checkout already lives on another site. Starter includes a customizable player, password protection, unlisted links, review tools and engagement analytics. Standard adds lead capture, calls to action and player branding. Advanced adds hosted livestreams and event chat.

Those plans show how long people watched, including a second-by-second heatmap. The checkout records the sale, so a paid test still needs that list of which version produced the order.

Vimeo's bandwidth article explains the monthly limit in the pricing table. Videos continue to stream if an account exceeds that limit. The bandwidth policy post says more than 99 percent of accounts stay under the limit. It gives at least 30 days after the first email before anything on the account changes, and it exempts some creative professionals and small nonprofits.

When a team shares one library, the page to read is Vimeo alternatives for teams and filmmakers. Vimeo alternatives by job is the shortlist when you have decided to leave. Free Vimeo alternatives covers a zero budget, and what people recommend instead of Vimeo comes from public discussions. Compare Vimeo, Wistia and YouTube when you are choosing the embed on a business page. See Vimeo pricing for the longer plan breakdown.

Changelog

  • 14 Sep 2026 — First published. We read Vimeo's plan and help pages and long-term user reports, and set out what each self-serve plan includes.
  • 23 Oct 2026: The title now names the review. The plan table lists Free, Starter, Standard and Advanced with storage and bandwidth. A new section covers a sales video and links to the alternatives pages, the Wistia and YouTube comparison, and the pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan can collect email addresses from the player?
Standard. Starter covers the player, privacy, review and engagement reports. Live events sit on Advanced.
What happens if monthly bandwidth is used up?
Viewers can still watch. Vimeo may ask you to use less, change plans, or take the library elsewhere. A second account does not increase the limit.
Can these plans be billed monthly?
Yes. The help center sells Starter, Standard and Advanced by the month and by the year. The upgrade page shows the yearly rate.
Can the reports show who paid?
They cover how long people watched, heatmap included. The payment stays on the cart you already use.
Where should I look for a different host?
Team libraries, a free host and a shortlist by job each have a page. The Wistia and YouTube comparison is the one for a business-page embed.
